Bubbles and windows
From Bellybuttonporn
What?
Ok, here's the story here. Every McDonald's has several registers, some on front counter and some in drive thru.

Bubbles
The windows in drive thru ("please pull up to the first window") are not called windows. They're called bubbles. I'm sure it's because they stick out of the building a little on a typical McD's. Also, the term "window" was likely taken before Drive Thru was invented.
Front Bubble
This is the second window. It's where you get your food and stuff. Some times it's also where you pay, but McD's tries to have the back bubble open all the time since it speeds things up.
Back Bubble
This is where you pay most of the time. If back bubble is open, this person is also probably taking orders, unless the store is really super busy and then there is another person back there taking orders or (even better) another person in front bubble taking orders.
So what's a window?
Windows
The registers on front counter are called windows. As in, "Julia, you will be on Window 2 and Fred will be on Window 3." Yeah, weird. I think it's cause in the 50's the McDonald's were walk-up, sorta like a Be-Bop's is now. So the front counter really was a couple of windows to take orders through.
So there you go.
