Omaha ho! Omaho?
From Bellybuttonporn
So I drove to Omaha and back today for my interview with West Corp. The interview went really well, I think. I had a good rapport with the interviewer, James, and was able to answer all of the questions he asked (from a preprinted packet which he assured me was identical for all applicants). Luckily I had done enough work that I was able to relate to the questions for the most part. We talked a little bit about what West does, and I talked to him about Omaha. The interviewer is from Dennison, so I asked him how Omaha compares to Iowa and stuff like that. Apparently there's a bar on every street there. Handy. The only downside to the interview was that he said not to expect a high-end salary to start. Ouch. However, my inside guy, Justin, gave me a 40k mark that he thought I might be offered around. That's not quite so bad, but still not super great either.
Oh, the wind was killer on the way there and back. I got a couple calls. One was from a headhunter which wanted an embedded programmer for a place in Marshalltown, and one was from Joel. Joel said that ISU's vet med college called him for a reference. From what he described, their talk went well. The Vet Med job doesn't pay much (they advertise a minimum of 31, but looking on isu's pay scale info page it shows a max of something like 38 for that position) so yuck.
So the other day Ally sat me down at McD's for an RDT. I told her I didn't have any plans to stay with McD's, and she was dissappointed. Her point was that with a degree I could go further in McDonald's than she could; I could be more than just a store manager. That's all well and good, but I bet I could do that anyhow without trying to move up from within the company.
To wit, I have applied at McDonald's Corporate being a regional support guy thingie. Sure, whatever, we'll see how that works.
I have decided to express salary offers in terms of SMUs.
Oh, here's a couple things I wanted to talk about:
